The number of teachers in Australia is in decline, leading to huge vacancies and unprepared university graduates thrown into the workforce. Almost half of all teaching degrees in Australia are never completed, with a further 50% who enter the industry leaving after the first 5 years.
Each high school student has unique underlying proficiencies, preferences, and personalities, requiring personalised attention. As a result if they fall behind, schools with high student to teacher ratios will need more resources to help them catch up. Negative impacts on students’ learning, caused by a lack of resources, will compound every term.
